Riding the Plastic Wave

CODE Keeper, Kathleen Egan aims to end the ride of the giant “Plastic Wave.” Egan, a surfer of seven years, noticed that the amount of plastic pollution in the water and on the beaches has continued to rise over the years.

From this, she decided to pick up the trash and plastic on her local coastline every day for three weeks. After collecting the debris, she and twelve other surfers assembled a giant “Plastic Wave.”

The purpose of the wave was twofold. First, she wanted people to see how much plastic is polluting our oceans and shores. And second, she wanted to convey the “barrel” effect of what our ocean will be like if we do not use substitutes for plastic.

Egan realizes that it will be difficult to stop using plastic all together. However, there are many alternatives to plastics such as woods and metals that could be used to help lessen this growing problem. Egan intends to use this wave as a way to bring awareness about the over-use of plastic and the effects it has on the ocean.
